The movie presents the school as a microcosm of a society where class divide ensues power play. The bullies torment the so-called dead kids - poor kids who, in the bullies' eyes, are misfits. One dead kid is not only the brightest academically but also the most challenged financially. We see him get bullied. This dead kid, finally crying enough is enough,  reluctantly agrees with the other dead kids to a plot to kidnap his tormentor in exchange for ransom. Of course, there are back stories and other subplots that make the story more interesting. 

I'm not sure if the style of changing color tones to suggest change in dramatic mood is necessary. It comes to a point where the style becomes distracting. The best thing about the movie is the cast. The characters they give life to are really either "dead" or "alive" on screen.
