The Hothouse

THE HOTHOUSE by Wolfgang Koeppen tells the dizzying account of two days in the life of recently-widowed Keetenheuve, an idealistic politician on the rise who is disillusioned by the corruption in post-war German politics, particularly in Bonn.

This book is political. Unfortunately, I’m not much familiar with the political scenario in Germany after the war. But, the book, although a work of fiction, has given some insights or, at least a glimpse, of how things were in German politics during those turbulent times.

This book, together with DEATH IN ROME and PIGEONS IN THE GRASS, completes the so called Trilogy of Defeat, written by the great – according to Gunter Grass – Wolfgang Koeppen during the 1950s.
