Jim Crace: THE PESTHOUSE
The prologue sets the tone of the novel: “Everybody died at
night ...”
The Pesthouse is a post-apocalyptic dystopia set in an
unnamed American domain that had been plagued by pestilence. There are
survivors, and they want to escape to Europe. The land is still fertile, the
waters are clean. Barbarism reigns anew. But, hope, for some, still lingers.
For obvious reason, this novel reminds me of Cormac McCarthy’s
The Road, which, I think, is the better novel. The Pesthouse, in my opinion, is
a decent book; in fact, I like it. Jim Crace’s crisp prose has the ability to
indulge (especially me).
