Film Review: Redbelt

Redbelt (David Mamet, 2008)

I didn't know there's this film until chanced upon it and I only became interested when I learned it was David Mamet who wrote and directed it. David Mamet, an American playwright and independent film maker, had left a good impression on me after I saw some of his films many years ago - House of Games (1987) and The Spanish Prisoner (1997). And this film didn't disappoint.

In Redbelt, the central character is Mike Terry, a world class expert in jiu-jitsu. He's a principled fighter who never fights in competitions for money; instead, he runs a jiu-jitsu training studio in L.A. However, conspiracy-born circumstances, just like in many of Mamet's films, leaves him with no better option but participate in a competition.

To appreciate the film, one needs to pay attention to character development because the marvel of the film is in the writing. All the other characters in the film are interesting.

Rating: 3.5/4.0
