Arnost Lustig: LOVELY GREEN EYES
To escape the fate of her family (mother, father and little brother), who were killed in a concentration camp, a 15-year old Jewish girl, Hanka, who takes advatage of her Aryan features, poses as an 18-year-old comfort woman in a military brothel for German soldiers.
The novel is a testament of guilt on the one hand and of will to survive in hellish conditions on the other. The translation of the novel from the Czech is so fine that the text looks like it’s originally written in English. Arnost Lustig’s writing and story-telling style makes the novel powerful and unforgettable.
One of the best that I've read.
