Film Review: The Magician (a.k.a. The Face)

The Magician (Ingmar Bergman, 1958)
In Swedish, with English subtitles

The film's original Swedish title, Ansiklet, translates as The Face, which is the film's alternate title when in it's UK release. In US, however, it's released as The Magician.

The story is simple (or so I thought): The police officer in an unnamed town requests that the Vogler's Magnetic Theater perform before them as test audience before allowing them to perform before the town people. Also in the audience are the medical examiner and a few more who are scientific-minded. The officer and the examiner scheme to expose the tricks of the troupe.

The story appears simple. However, it makes me think of the things it may suggest. To say it's symbolic is an understatement. It may suggest the unceasing conflict between science and faith (or, maybe, religion). Or, science versus art? I don't want to go into some details which make me feel and think this way.

This film may not make Ingmar Bergman's list of greatest films, but it's still so good to get my approval. The black and white cinematography never ceases to add mystery. The "horror" part of the film, in my opinion, is integral to feel and experience the film. It's entertaining and, at the same time, thought-provoking.
