Aunt Julia And The Scriptwriter

Both entertainment and literature, Aunt Julia And The Scriptwriter (by Mario Vargas Llosa) is a comic novel alternately telling the love affair between the narrator (Marito, or Varguitas to his best friend) and his Aunt Julia and the “madness” of the scriptwriter (of the outrageously mixed-up, but hugely popular, radio serials) that he works with at Radio Central in Lima, Peru. Told in a seemingly soap opera motif, the novel suggests the failure of Marito as a writer because he’s too preoccupied with living life to the fullest and the deterioration of the scriptwriter because he doesn’t have time to experience life.

Funny, suspenseful and, sometimes, sad; but still, a marvelous piece!
