Doris Lessing: THE GRASS IS SINGING

The novel tells of Mary's escape from her existence she can't discern by marrying a poor and unsuccessful farmer, her being entangled into attraction with an enigmatic black servant, and her descent into depression, which all lead to her murder.

This is Doris Lessing's first novel, the second of her novels I've read so far, and also my initiation to any literature on the what seemed to be Apartheidic. Unrelenting and dense with scathing truthfulness is how I describe this piece of literature from the 2007 Nobel Laureate in Literature.

The novel is sad. However, it can't be denied that its prose is masterfully written.
