Movie No. 52 (2018): THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY

The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016)
Director: Matt Brown
Cast: Dev Patel, Jeremy Irons, Stephen Fry

An important mathematics concept - too complex to be described here - that changed modern mathematics forever is at the center of the narrative. However, the movie is more than this concept. It is mostly about the dynamics of friendship between a self-thought mathematician (an Indian) and a brilliant professor at Trinity College in Cambridge. There is also a subtle suggestion of racial discrimination, class differences, and tug-of-war between traditon and ambition, which were most aptly interspersed in the narrative.

The story is inspiring. It is based on a true story, making it somewhat predictable. We can extrapolate how it'll end. But, still, the movie is entertaining and a really good watch. The lead characters are made even more engaging by the nuanced performances of Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons. Cinematography and costume design meticulously capture the period and, in some scenes, the tension of backdrop historical moments.
