Movie No. 63 (2018): SWAY

Sway (aka Yureru) (2006)
Director: Miwa Nishikawa
Cast: Joe Odagiri, Teruyuki Kagawa, Yoko Maki
In Japanese, with English subtitles

On his older brother's invitation to celebrate their mother's first death anniversary, Takeru travels from Tokyo to their hometown but arrives late. Their father castigates him for being late for the occasion and for being absent for quite a long time. The following day, Minoru (the older brother) invites Takeru and Takeru's ex-girlfriend to hike at a picturesque gorge they used to frequent as children. But, an argument on the suspension bridge leads to an accident. The accident brings forth a police investigation, suspecting a possible homicide. The incident and investigation incite the surfacing a deep-rooted sibling rivalry. The result is a movie that examines the polar difference between countryside stagnation and quick-paced city existence. The brothers personify the ends of the poles. Resentment, guilt, and possible murder thicken the drama. The character-driven narrative is well written. All three lead actors masterfully give life to the characters assigned to them, particularly Joe Odagiri and Teruyuki Kagawa as brothers. Cinematography is gorgeous.
