Movie No. 68 (2018): APOSTLE

Apostle (2018)
Director: Gareth Evans
Cast: Dan Stevens, Michael Sheen, Lucy Boynton

Apostle is a period movie. The setting is early 1900's London. Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) returns home after long years of absence. He finds out his sister has been held hostage by a religious cult in a remote island. The movie, therefore, is about the rescue of the sister. What do we expect? Well, the movie, in translating the narrative of the 'rescue' into screen, meets my expectation. In fact, it exceeds my expectation. I never expected the movie to be riddled with (some) scenes of violence and torture that I never saw in other movies. Some other surprises (which are still coherent with the narrative and characterization) can take your breath away. The ultimate surprise, or twist, is the ending.

Apostle is a period movie. Cinematography makes an emphasis on showing elements and visual textures that are indicative of the period. I consider the movie as part horror. The synergy between editing and cinematography helps establish that. Costume design is really apt for the period and the isolated community portrayed in the movie. Performances are excellent.
