Baran

"From the hot fire of being apart comes the flame that burns the heart.”

Baran (2001), more than a visual feast, is an affecting humanistic film that tells the emotional awakening of Lateef, a young man who has discovered a secret in a construction site in Iran, where he works. The construction site illegally hires Afghans. The site is presented as a microcosm of blue collar job in present day Tehran. Lateef’s efforts to protect the secret will make him discover his own self-worth through acts of kindness to other. On the side, the film also tackles the desperate plight of Afghan people who have been refugees in Iran.

This wonderful film by Majid Majidi, the Iranian cinematic genius who directed Children of Heaven, is something that a real film connoisseur shouldn’t miss.
