The Interrogation

The novel is about Adam Pollo, an amnesiac former student, who is not sure whether he was a deserter from the army or he escaped from a mental asylum. One should have an idea which one is it during the “interrogation.”

I guess the novel is an examination of consciousness and emptiness: Adam busies himself with dealing with non-existent problems, with seeing the world on the point of view of a stray dog or white rat, with seducing an equally detached female, etc., through musings he writes on an exercise book.

The author, J. M. G. Le Clezio, 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, wrote the novel in way that for me is bizarre. Chapters that are labeled as letters of the alphabet, news clippings that are inserted in the text, and words or phrases that are either deleted by brushing over them thick black ink or by a strikethrough are some of these bizarreness of the novel. Reading the book has given me a chance to experience a different kind of experiment only an author like Le Clezio can offer.
