Roberto Bolano: ANTWERP
This short novel has a weird structure. BolaƱo said of this book: “The only novel that doesn’t embarrass me is Antwerp.” I don’t know why.
The narrative is fractured,
making the story hard to follow. Where it leads is somewhat twisted. If it has
a plot, then I must have I failed to see it. In the 56 small chapters that
comprise the book, I see characters doing their thing and a lot of other things
going on (based on what the narrator sees or, maybe, thinks); however, I can’t
reconcile everything. Maybe I’m just not used to this structure which, to some,
is excitingly inventive.
