Graham Greene: THE END OF THE AFFAIR

London. Just after World War II.

Sarah Miles has an adulterous affair with a novelist (Maurice Bendrix). Her husband is a public servant. The affair will remain secret for several years until one day she finds Bendrix lying on the floor of a basement; a bomb has just been dropped on the building. She makes deal with God so that Bendrix lives. She will then break up with Bendrix without giving him reason to keep her promise to God. Bendrix, angry, hires a private detective to know if there's another man besides him and her husband. What he'll find out is something that is hard for him to accept.

The first-person narratives of different voices worked excellently well. The novel, although partly disturbing and melodramatic, is beautiful and absorbing.
