Yann Martel: LIFE OF PI

Pi Patel, an Indian boy in his mid-teen, ends up in the company of a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and a 450-lb Bengal tiger in a lifeboat when the ship that's suppose to transport his family and the animals from their zoo to North America sinks. The orangutan gets killed, the hyena devours the zebra, and the tiger eats the hyena, leaving just Pi Patel and the tiger in the lifeboat. Constant hunger tests the tenacity of both Pi and the beast. What happens in the next 7 months that Pi and the beast float in the Pacific Ocean is an interesting and inspiring tale of survival. This is one of my most rewarding reads.

Winner of The Man Book Prize of 2002. The film adaptation of this novel, directed by Ang Lee, will be shown in November 2012.
