Movie No. 42 (Cinemalaya 2018): DISTANCE

Distance (2018)
Director: Perci Intalan
Cast: Iza Calzado, Nonie Buencamino, Therese Malvar
In Tagalog, with English subtitles

While grieving the loss of a loved one in a foreign country, Liza gets an unexpected visitor - her husband, Anton, who she left five years earlier. Anton invites Liza back to the family she abandoned.

The movie made me feel uncomfortable, seeing Liza trying to re-integrate into the family she left and seemingly failing. Her daughters are cold. Anton is so achingly desperate to restore sense of family in the household.

I was uncomfortable witnessing the kind of dysfunction in the family, which is not typical in Filipino movies. The sensibility is quite European. And that's a good thing. The movie, in my opinion, deliberately makes the audience uncomfortable. Framing of scenes, choice of shots, and calculated performances succeed in relaying this.

Rating: 3.5/4.0
