Film Review: Le Samourai

Alain Delon as Jef Costello in Le Samourai
Le Samourai (Jean Pierre Melville, 1967)
In French, with English subtitles

Jef Costello's 'profession' prevents him from forming any kind of relationships with other people. He is a hired assassin. He 'hunts' alone. In his latest assignment- a contract kill a night club owner - he's seen by the night club singer after the deed. Now he's part of the roundup of suspects. Then he's on the run, the police and his employers after him.

The film is quite effective in using less dialogues. In fact, the first 10 minutes has been executed without dialogues. It's a feast to the eye and ears (score and sound effects). The result is one that puts the audience right there where the characters do their things. Alain Delon is perfect for the role. That hat is cool; it matches his character. This is a film noir at its best.
