Movie No. 14 (2020): LOST GIRLS

Lost Girls (2020)
Director: Liz Garbus
Cast: Amy Ryan, Gabriel Byrne

A mother (Mari) learns about the mysterious disappearance of her daughter (Shannan). Shannan hasn't been living with her mother for a while. They're are not in speaking terms. The mother in Mari decides to embark on a journey to find her daughter, dead or alive. Tracing the places where Shannan was last seen, Mari unearths other unsolved and covered up cases of other disappearances of other girls.

This plot is not novel. We may have already seen a similar story in other movies. I'm not suggesting that the movie is boring or uninspired. What makes it interesting is the way it solidly speaks with one's emotions. Amy Ryan acts out Mari's grief and self-blame with constraint. It makes the movie painful to watch. Why did these things happen in the first place? It is even more painful is to realize that these things may not be random. And that's scary.
