Movie No. 72 (2018): BURNING

Burning (2018)
Director: Lee Chang-dong
Cast: Yoo Ah-in, Steven Yeon, Jung-seo Jeon
In Korean, with English subtitles

Three characters. Two of them were old friends, Jongsu and Haemi, who meet again recently in a chance encounter. The third character, Ben, is a mysterious bachelor who Haemi met during her recent trip in Africa. They become a trio of interesting characters. Interesting, but elusive and mysterious as a cat. Yes, there's a cat in the narrative. After all, Harukami Murakami wrote the novella that's the basis of the film. There's always a cat in practically every Haruki Murakami's work.

The slow-burning narrative helps in the build up leading to the shocking finale. The shifts in plot are so fluid that one can hardly notice until (we think) everything makes sense. That's usually the outcome of the synergy between good script and editing. And then, the cinematography is beautiful.

This is a really good film.

I saw this film as in-flight entertainment en route to CDG from TPE. I'm sure it will look even better when seen on
a bigger screen.
