A newly-ordained young Roman Catholic priest is assigned to a small town in Mexico to assist an aging priest in the parish. There, he will a difficult challenge as he will be faced with temptation and shocking liaisons and corruption involving priests. The movie is loosely based on Eca De Quiroz novella of the same title. 

The movie is anti-Catholic. Some ironies that are integral to the story are familiar and really shocking and brave. And familiar. 

Gael Garcia Bernal, as Padre Amare, is devastatingly good.
